Sometimes we feel alien in our own world, like a hypothetical living being from another planet, where everything would be gaseous. There would be no ground to stand on or water to swim in (we saw this show at the Alder Planetarium in Chicago about alien worlds and this kite in Milwaukee made us think of one of them). It all makes us wonder what's happening between us, the music we do and the public out there. The show listeners have so far been disappointing; we went from 8 in Ann Arbor, to 30 in Chicago (only two years ago we were much more successful), and 11 in Milwaukee.
We do put on a good show, and everybody comes up afterwards and shares with us their enthusiasm about both bands, and all without exception apologize for the light turn- out, even the club owners, who know a good show when they see one.
There is one thing that is encouraging- we sell a lot of CDs and T-shirts. It shows us that we are doing something right. What we have to seriously consider is what we are doing wrong, because at this rate we are an endangered species.
We come to realize that people are not willing to go out and hear music, or that in this world of mass production the one with the biggest soap box is the only one that gets attention, and for a label like ours, we can build one only as big as our limited funds allow. This low turnout also comes as overall CD sales are going down, due in part by the availability of free access on the Internet. It has become obvious that many young people think that music should be free, and when it comes to going out nobody questions paying $10 for a movie, but many people balk at a $7 cover charge.
These trends are strong and artists like us have to adapt to them and face them with creative new ideas. How can a tour like this one be financed if the revenues are greatly exceeded by the costs? My feeling is two-fold: first we all firmly believe that for music to move forward and stay fresh, performing is a necessity, and it puzzles me that people who are so enthralled by reality shows refuse to be part of this one, because unlike the ones piped down to your living room this one needs you (the public) as an active participant- without ear there is no music. Secondly, since it seems to be difficult to get out of one's own dwelling you have to bring it to some form of media format, so we will be releasing paid downloads of shows and DVDs documenting this tour we are embarked upon.
Sarah's concept of bringing together the modern and the old into one CD is quite revolutionary. Nobody can do what she does, and do it with such ease and clarity. The new CD street date is next week, Tuesday, October 21st. We have had great feedback about it so far, as we've been promoting it since early September, but a lot of people don't know quite what to make out of it, because it does not fit in the mold. This to me is a compliment and should be what will make people come down to the gigs, because it is DIFFERENT and we are SPECIAL. Anybody bored out there?
One thing for sure- life on the tour is not boring, it is always new and exciting, even if sometimes we don't know what it all means, and question why...
On a last note, we will keep moving (like I am in this picture) because we believe in it and for the strong support of the few who dare to come out, and risk to be enchanted by the miracle of live music. I know I am speaking for a lot of groups out there, in that we are being told by club owners and promoters that audiences have been light in general.
By the way, Chicago is a cool city. We went on top of the Hancock Building for lunch: all you can eat at 1000 ft.-what else could you ask for? Then we went to the planetarium and enjoyed this beautiful view of the city that we are sharing with you.
